Finding Images With Metadata

Show/Hide Contents

Assigning Metadata to your images makes them much easier to find, by either searching for them, or by using the Metadata Browser to help location your images.  Both of these features require the use of Bibble 5's Library and Catalogs, and will only find images in Catalogs that are open (those visible in the Catalogs Browser).

Searching for Images

If you know exactly what Keywords or Metadata you are looking for, you can Search your Catalog for that content.  Simply type the term you want to search for into the Search Box at the top of the Catalogs tool on the Browse Panel, and press enter to perform the search.  The results will be shown in the Thumbnail Panel.

Browsing for Images

Using the Browse panel can be a very fast and effective way to find the images you are interested in.  Using the Metadata Browser, you can quickly find all images shot on a specific date, with a particular camera, or any combination of the most common shooting information Metadata fields or Keywords.  The number in parentheses beside the metadata category name indicates how many Versions include that metadata entry.  This can provide more precise control that searching for images as described above.

MetadataBrowser

Link to Catalogs

The contents and counts in the Metadata Browser are determined by the "Link to Catalogs" checkbox at the top of the Metadata Browser:

When unchecked: The Metadata Browser will show contents and counts for all Catalogs currently open in your Library.
When checked: The Browser shows only contents and counts for versions in the Catalogs & Folders selected in the Catalogs tool.  This can provide a very concise view of the metadata for the images in a single folder, multiple folders, or returned from a search.

With this control, you can filter out the Metadata for portions of your Catalog that you are not interested in.  For example, if you have your Library Folders organized by Clients, you could select a specific Client's folder in the Library Browser.  Then, checking "Link to Folders" would show you only the Keywords, cameras, dates, and other metadata for images shot for that Client.

Refine

Refining the Metadata Browser contents is another great way to limit what is shown in the Metadata Browser - ensuring that you can always quickly find the images your seeking.  Refinement works by first selecting a Metadata Entry from the Metadata Browser.  In the example above, the Camera Make / Model entry "Canon EOS 20D" was selected.  Then, click the Refine button at the top of the Metadata Browser panel.  This adds "Canon EOS 20D" as a refinement step - which limits the contents of the Metadata Browser to be only versions that were shot with the Canon EOS 20D camera.

You can add many refinements  in any order you want.  For example, you could select 3 Stars, 4 Stars, and 5 Stars from the Ratings Metadata section, then Refine.  That would show only your best images - those you have tagged as 3 Stars or higher.  Then, select a year or month from the Date/Time section, and click refine again.  Now your seeing only your best images from a specific time frame.  If later decide you want to see all images from that same time frame - not just the 3 Star or higher images, click the "X" button next to the Rating Refine entry to remove that Refinement step.

The items you Refine will be highlighted in the Metadata Browser to remind you that only a portion of your Library is being listed in the counts and contents of the Metadata Browser.
